It’s time for a change in Texas.

Fort Bend Truth & Times thanks Governor Greg Abbott for his years of public service. Texans can recognize that service and still conclude that the state needs new leadership, fresh priorities and a stronger focus on the families who make Texas work.

For governor, Fort Bend Truth & Times endorses Gina Hinojosa.

Hinojosa’s story begins in Texas public schools and continues through a career serving workers and families. She is a civil-rights and union lawyer, a former school board president and a state representative. Her campaign has centered on three concerns that matter to Fort Bend households: strengthening public schools, easing the pressure on family budgets and making state government work for Texans rather than powerful interests.

Public education is central to Fort Bend County’s future. Families here want strong neighborhood schools, qualified teachers and campuses equipped to prepare students for college, careers and a changing economy. Hinojosa has put public schools at the center of her campaign and has argued for restoring local voices in decisions about struggling districts. As governor, she would need to work with the Legislature to deliver many of her proposals. That will take negotiation and clear plans, but the state’s education debate deserves a leader willing to make public schools a priority.

Affordability is another urgent issue. Fort Bend families are watching housing, insurance, utility and property-tax costs. Hinojosa has proposed ending corporate subsidies and cutting certain government contracts, using the savings to reduce homeowners’ property-tax bills. The details and legislative path matter; voters should expect a specific, workable plan. But her focus on asking whether public dollars are serving residents is a useful challenge for state government.

A governor cannot solve every problem alone. The Texas Legislature writes the laws and controls the budget, so progress requires building agreement across the Capitol. Hinojosa’s record as a state representative and her experience on a school board give her experience working inside public institutions. Her challenge will be to turn campaign priorities into results, explain what the governor can do, and be candid about what requires legislative approval.

This endorsement is not a dismissal of Governor Abbott’s service. It is a judgment about what Texas needs next. After years under one governor, voters have the right to ask whether the state is delivering for working families, students, teachers and local communities. A new administration can bring new scrutiny, new ideas and a renewed commitment to public accountability.

Fort Bend County is growing and changing. Our residents need a governor who understands that Texas’ strength depends on people having a fair chance to learn, work, afford a home and build a future. Hinojosa offers a different direction and has made those everyday concerns central to her campaign.

We thank Governor Abbott for his service to Texas. Now it is time to turn the page.
