Fort Bend Truth & Times endorses Sandy Ibáñez for Texas House District 28. Her experience as a Fort Bend ISD teacher, business operations professional and community volunteer gives her a practical perspective on the challenges facing local families and schools.

Fort Bend County is growing quickly. That growth brings opportunity, but it also puts pressure on schools, roads, utilities, housing and family budgets. The next representative for House District 28 must understand how those changes affect residents and ask whether public decisions serve the people who live here.

Ibáñez is a lifelong Fort Bend County resident. Her work in classrooms and business operations gives her experience with the effects of decisions on students, families, workers and taxpayers. We believe the district needs a representative who will listen to residents, weigh the consequences of policy choices and remain engaged after the campaign ends.

Her time teaching in Fort Bend ISD is a particular strength. Ibáñez taught fifth-grade reading, writing and social studies and supported English learners, including Spanish-speaking students. That experience gave her a firsthand view of the varied needs students bring to school and the work educators do to help them succeed.

She has identified school funding, teacher recruitment and retention, class sizes, special education, bilingual education, and career and technical education as priorities. Those issues affect students now and help shape the region’s future workforce. Every student should have a fair opportunity to prepare for college, technical training, an apprenticeship, a career or another path after graduation.

We also support Ibáñez’s focus on access and opportunity. A student’s financial circumstances should not determine the limits of their future. Strong schools, financial aid, job training and community support can help open doors. We expect her to approach those programs responsibly and consider whether they are reaching people’s needs.

The challenges facing House District 28 extend beyond education. Growth affects transportation, utilities, housing and household costs. Residents need a representative who will examine how state decisions affect communities on the ground, communicate clearly about difficult tradeoffs and work toward practical responses.

Continued public service must come with accountability. We expect Ibáñez to stay accessible to constituents, explain her positions and decisions, and report back on the results of her work. Her classroom and professional experience offer a useful foundation; voters should also expect her to keep learning from the people and communities she represents.

Fort Bend needs a representative who understands the county’s families and sees education and opportunity as central to its future. Ibáñez’s local roots, teaching experience and stated priorities make a persuasive case for her candidacy.
